Leveraging Off Technology to Assist with Learning a Trade

In this section, examples from a range of studies introducing TEL to pre-trades and apprenticeship programmes are used to illuminate aspects of TEL presented in the above sections. The range of studies reported are summarised in Fig. 5.1. These studies involved vocational teachers and their students and the author as researcher /educational developer. The studies used practice-based participatory research (PPR) as a means to engage all the participants in designing, developing and deploying TEL to improve learning activities and opportunities for learners. As each iteration of the TEL intervention was introduced and worked through, findings from previous iterations were added or processes amended. The TEL approaches which emerged from this process were therefore informed by contributions from learners and teachers, allowing for TEL to influence the enhancement of teaching and learning in the particular context in which the study was carried out.

The studies presented below are collated based on the main delivery approaches (i.e. the enacted curriculum) including face-to-face, blended or ‘flipped’ and distance as presented visually in Fig. 5.1. The importance of matching TEL to the learning outcomes to be achieved is reiterated through each of the following sections.
